Music and Language

People are quick to point out to me how music and math are related. I understand that. The rhythms are directly proportional to understanding fractions or parts of the whole. But music is SO MUCH MORE than rhythm.

Last Saturday I went to an Orff workshop that was a little unusual in that half of it was a lecture with a powerpoint presentation about language and music and auditory discrimination. Of course, half of it was trying out the lesson plans for the classroom (as seen in this photo), but understanding how children need to hear things in their heads, to distinguish between higher and lower pitches, listen carefully to poems and music to help them discriminate between phonemes in reading and language fluency.
